Scruffy Love I wish I were a teddy bear With old, brown, matted fur. I wish I had two marble eyes And paws that say “come here.” I wish my mouth were made of cloth My nose as well, but black. I wish I had a cotton heart; I know that you’d like that. I know that if I had these things, I’d be the one you want when life brings Pain and tears your way. I’d be the one to dry those tears With fur rubbed thin through all the years You’ve turned to me to say: “I love you.” I’d be the one you seek When all you see is black and blue. I’d be your last resort When your love takes a shot at you. I’d never be the one To make your smile disappear. I’d be the one who gently Helps you deal with all your fear. A teddy’s love is what I wish To give to you, my Heart. A love that heals all wounds And gives us both a brand new start; A love that sees the best in you At all times of the day; A love that makes you feel like You’re not simply in the way. A love that says “You’re lovely” Even though you feel let down; A love that says that you’re the one I want to be around. I have no fur or marble eyes, I have no paws, it’s true. But still I say “Come here, And let me be a bear for you.” -Jeremy Biggs Copyright 2006
