Offsite data storage - any recommendations?

I’d rather start with a general direction than a time-consuming blind search!

As Jeremy has begun burning out all his tech-energy on his business, I’ve been getting more irritated with the tech-tasks that have been piling up at home. So I’m taking a few matters into my own hands: cleaning up the website and eventually recreating it, creating a site map, trying to get listed by Google (it crawls us but doesn’t list us), finding a new photo hosting platform, and last but most importantly:

Offsite storage. Keep reading…

I DID IT!!!

I fixed the blog text color problem! I took a look at the source code and noticed that all the blogs with white text had the heading h3.Jeremy, including the first one that had a problem, even though it was written by me. So I went into the stylesheet, and sure enough, h3.Jeremy had a line, “color: #FFFFFF;”

Apparently we changed it when we were going through and cleaning up the website, but Jeremy hasn’t written a blog since then so we didn’t detect the problem. I must have written the first problematic entry on the monster computer, inadvertently signing into Wordpress with Jeremy’s saved login.

Woo-hoo! Occasionally I do learn something in this neverending round of college classes!

Don’t be fooled by imposters!

OK. So, we launched our site four years ago. Two years ago or so, some guy copied our name. Not a big deal, it’s a free internet, but the problem is that when I Google Biggs, he comes up, and we don’t. He doesn’t have as many people linking to his site as we do, though. (When I Google “thebiggspicture,” all of the sites linking to us show up - even though our site doesn’t - but nothing comes up for him. When I Google “hisname,” I still don’t get any links.)

We changed the title in our html today to include our names and the official name of the site. We also created a site map, which I understand it will take Google some time to absorb. Is there anything else we can do?

Please pardon our dust

We’re (finally!) under construction. It will probably take a while, so in the meantime please feel free to laugh at us. :)

Dryer lint

First off, web update: we know our links still aren’t available at the left side of the page; apparently the fix is time-intensive and Jeremy can’t do it right now. If find this annoying, but c’est la vie!

I purchased some Christmas presents that I felt would benefit from being pre-washed, so I’ll have the washer and dryer going all weekend. Before I put in the second load, I cleaned the lint trap. It was such nice, soft, warm, clean, brand-new-stuff lint, and I wondered: is dryer lint a viable option for insulation? We’re “planning” ten years or so in this house, and then making the leap to the custom dream-home. Ten years of four loads a week, sometimes including fuzzy sweaters, should yield enough dryer lint to insulate a modest house, right? And it’s not only cheap, but green!

My main concerns were efficiency and bugs, so I hopped online. It turns out that angora sweaters do not good insulation make, but the primary reason is not what I thought: dryer lint is highly flammable. So we’ll just forget that idea.

Oh well, I tried.

TrueTech website launch!

We just spent a few hours putting the final touches on the text for the website, which was the last stop on the way to its launch! It is finally finished, and you can reach it at the address below! Constructive criticism (and praise) are welcome, and you can leave them in the comments for this blog. Enjoy, and wish us luck!

Website tweaks

I hope that, by now, all of you are using Firefox or an equivalent, because otherwise our site may look quite a mess! Our apologies if you wandered over here while we were in the middle of cleaning up. We made some pretty big goofs along the way. But here’s where we stand:

  1. We’ve cleaned up our left nav-bar by adding drop-down lists for archives. One has a View button and one doesn’t, I know…. Apparently making them both the same would have taken all day. Don’t ask me. I’m just the observer.
  2. We took out the Movie Reviews under the Other Pages heading because we haven’t touched them in about two years.
  3. Jeremy added a new piece of music, Path of Thought. He wrote it in 2001, with a better orchestral sound font than he has now, unfortunately and unbelievably!
  4. We’ve added a new link to the right of our title. Please go take a look at it. Five years ago when I met Jeremy, we had more than a little trouble with someone he knew. About eight months into it, I stumbled onto this verse, and went to Jeremy asking why he hadn’t mentioned it - he had forgotten about it/ didn’t think it applied. Many years of our lives were absolutely destroyed by that troublesome person - years that we wouldn’t have lost if more people were aware of this verse and had made the choice to act on it - and as far as we can tell the rest of our lives will be poisoned by the subsequent actions and attitudes of the people around us. Jeremy recently learned in his men’s group that this is a common problem - just a couple of weeks ago he heard the story of a very similar situation and had to point out this verse because, once again, the person involved had forgotten about it/ didn’t think it applied. And so we post it for the rest of the world to see: Matthew 18:15-17, “When a Brother Sins Against You”.

No idea

Well, I have no idea why my long post is doing what it’s doing, but it’ll have to stay that way. It’s done, anyway. Peter, can you figure it out?
