Matthew 18:15-17 |
I didn’t expect to get home so late this afternoon. We didn’t expect to actually buy real furniture today. But that’s what we did, and now I’m totally crunched trying to get dinner ready for Jeremy’s parents and their friend tonight, so I need to go take care of that.
But we bought our first real, new furniture today, and for more than 1/2 off too!

Jeremy spoke with our loan officer and the appraiser yesterday and was left with a bad taste in his mouth, so we started the process all over again with another bank last night.
Imagine our surprise when our loan officer called this morning to say that the appraiser had run the numbers over again and came in at exactly $1000 over what we need ($26K over her original number.) And that’s with generous estimate in our contractor’s quote plus a new front door.
HOLY STINKIN STINK, WE’RE ADDING ON TO OUR HOUSE!!!!!

A belated Merry Christmas to you! Jeremy started a blog about his HTPC yesterday which began with a Christmas greeting, but he never finished the blog and therefore never posted the greeting, hence I send it.
We’re in central New York right now, winding down and packing up after a Christmas visit with my mother. It’s been hectic but fun, with some new additions to the cast of characters, such as Kevin (aka “Doodey head” apparently) the bf of Heather (aka “Poopey”). Kevin and Heather are further known as Dad-and-Mom-to-be.
That’s right! My sister Heather is pregnant! Sometime in May I will become the proud Aunt of a little baby boy or girl.
….And I’m not sure how to segue from that into anything else…..
This year we tackled Christmas with an excellent camera, or at least one that blows our old one out of the ballpark. We took advantage of Christmas sales (and my personal backlash from the health insurance fiasco) and purchased a Cannon SD1000 on Saturday. I spent some time practicing before the big day, so we ended up with some pretty good shots - although, even with practice I’m not much of a photographer! I’ll upload them to the net when we get home today, and they’ll tell much of the story for me.
So here’s to the return of pictures at The Biggs Picture!
We’re sleep-deprived and over-stuffed, and we still have a long drive ahead, so we may not get back here today - but in the meantime I hope you all have plenty of time to ride out the Christmas let-down (or Christmas recovery I guess, depending on how old you are!), and that you enjoyed your holiday.

It’s strange to me that I don’t have more motivation to write this blog. I had a fantastic experience over a weekend (Oct 5-7), and yet for some reason can’t drum up any enthusiasm to actually bring a little of that experience to our blog-reading audience. But with my wife’s coaxing, and a hardening of my will, I shall feed you.
For anyone who doesn’t know, Stand in the Gap is a coming-together of men from all over the country, making a mini-pilgrammage to mall in Washington DC (the Forest Gump mall, not the buy-trendy mall). The idea is to stand together as men who desire and strive to be men of God, and spend time praying for the country, each other, and ourselves, spend time worshipping the God who gave us a country that allows such things.
While all of this certainly made a suitable impact on my life, my real take-away was the opportunity the share in the worship with so many other men who share my desire to be a true man of God. 30 men from my church made the trip, ages ranging from 17 to 70+ years. These were men I hardly knew, but each of us shared a bond that you could almost see, and most certainly could feel. We were there because of Christ, and never before had I felt that bond more strongly. When a Christian steps into a church, they are surrounded by men and women who share a tie that is stronger than all imagination. I talked and prayed with many of my brothers that weekend; we shared experiences and struggles and hopes, all with in the safe confines of the house of God, that is, our Christian family. I learned a little better what it means to be a son of the living God, a child both sheltered and empowered by a supportive Father. To be a small part of the sea of men kneeling in the hot sun in prayer was a chance I am thrilled to say I was able to receive. And if it is His will, I will receive it again in 10 years.
There’s probably more to say, but it will have to come later. Pictures (on the cell) will come soon!

It’s been a long while since I sat down at the blog desk, and that is almost literally because I’ve been non-stop for weeks. So, there are two weekends that need blogging, and today is the day to do it (before I run off to my Bible study in an hour, that is).
A few weeks ago, IBM in Burlington was having their annual “family day”, and my parents invited us up if we were available. We were, and it sounded exactly like the kind of thing we look for around here: free hamburgers, hotdogs, cake, cotton candy, popcorn, and games! Woo-hoo! So north we went. When we got there, Mom and Dad first took us for a tour of the indoor-city of a place they call IBM Burlington. We got to see how the chips are made, and even handle some silicon wafers which, when printed with chips (which ours were), can be with well over $100,000, sometimes closer to $200,000! They also put out some of the clean-uniforms everyone has to wear, and I dressed myself up…once was enough. The place is enormous, and very interesting.
Outside, we had lunch and wandered around until we came across one of those blow-up games that looked neat. It consisted of a bouncy two-lane track with a divider in the middle (the whole thing is just filled with air like a balloon), and on the divider is a strip of velcro. Two people strap on harnesses, then go the end of the lanes where they hook up to a couple bungee cords to the back of the harness. The idea is to run as far as you can up the lane and drop a cloth beanbag onto the velcro divider before the bungee cord becomes so tight that it pulls you flying backwards spread-eagle. Funniest thing you’ll see, and man was it fun. Angela and I both tried it, and the next few days, our necks were feeling it bad.
So we enjoyed our free food and cotton candy, and just hanging out with Mom and Dad for a while. All free, and good fun. Thanks Mom and Dad for inviting us!
Ok, so after that weekend, it seems like the weeks just cranked by us, we just seemed so busy. Two weekends ago, we had the privilege of entertaining two very special guests, special not only for the fact that they were our first true guests in a house that feels like a house, but because they were Ember and Vishal, our cousins bound for England in a couple weeks!
They arrived on Friday night, driving straight up from D.C. after leaving their apartment for the last time. We gave them the grand tour, caught up on lives for a bit, then headed for bed. The next morning, we cooked up some waffles for breakfast, then headed up to the Norwich farmers market, where we knew a stand was offering a taste of raw milk. There’s lots of stuff there, so we all just sort of milled around, picked up some goodies like fresh-baked bagels, cookies, brownies, and listened to some of the live music. It was an absolutely gorgeous day. Afterwards, we took them to Riverview Farm in Plainsfield, where they have apple-picking, blueberry-picking, and lots of other pickings. We picked some apples, gobbled a million blueberries, and then became the first people of the year to try out the corn maze. That thing is a lot of fun, let me tell you. If you can find one, take a run through it.
On our way back to the house, we stopped to pick up some fresh eggs and milk at McNamara Farms down the road from Riverview. Fresh CHOCOLATE milk, and holy stinkin stinkpots, it’s the best I’ve ever had. When we got home, we rested up for a bit……..and then the tennis began.
I had been waiting to play tennis with Vishal for a LONG time, because he is darn good, and it’s always fun to play against someone way better than you. We must have played for 3 hours, and while we played Ember did some running and Angela baked the same kind of cake she baked for their wedding cake: pumpkin spice cake with maple cream cheese frosting. Unbelievable. After tennis, we cleaned up and ate one of my favorite dishes: Pork tenderloin with a mustard-vinaigrette glaze, and a plate of greens. Fantastic. After dinner, we piled into our tiny den and watched Willow. Man, that was a good day.
Sunday was a little more laid back. Angela and I went to church in the morning, giving Ember and Vishal a little time to themselves after the hubbub of getting themselves moved out of their apartment and up to the northeast. We had lunch soon after we got back, then after I had a meeting for leaders of the new church children’s program, we got right back on the tennis courts! Oh baby. So much fun. Angela came with us this time, and for a while we were all four out there swinging away. After getting cleaned up, Ember and Vishal took us to one of our favorite restaurants for dinner, The Three Tomatoes. THANK YOU BOTH! Perfect dinner, and company to match.
Monday we started the morning off with hearty helpings of fresh scrambled eggs mixed with a delicious herb cheese, and some fruity fruits. We then settled ourselves down for a cut-throat game of Settlers of Catan. Man that game is fun, even when you get your butt whooped. Seriously. Whooped. Vishal and Ember ruled the board.
That pretty much brought our visit to an end. We did take them to see the land we’ve been drooling over for the past year, and from there, they took off for Oma’s and beyond. We were so glad to have them, and we’re hoping to be able to visit them in England next year!
Thanks again, Ember and Vishal, for helping us break in our new kitchen table and being fantastic guests! Can’t wait to see you guys again. Have fun!

Jeremy’s at his last day of motorcycle school right now. (I decided not to go with him, thus I am blogging.) Apparently he really, really liked it yesterday. He had a TON of fun, and even went in early today so he could get some extra riding time in. He can’t wait to practice and go riding with his father and/or his friend Jay. But, by the time he got home last night he was exhausted. And then he had to get up at six this morning (the class is in Concord). He asked me if there was any chance I was tired at nine last night. I looked at him and said, “So, you were gone all last night, you were gone all day today, you’ll be gone all day tomorrow - and then when you finally get home you’re dead tired and no kind of company at all. Gee, this isn’t familiar or anything!” I smiled at him, he smiled at me, and then we got ready for bed. It’s only one weekend, so it’s OK.
What a difference.
I am officially bored. I’ve made some cookies, cleaned the kitchen, done some reading, written a couple of e-mails, and now I’m just… puttering. There are a couple of things I could do if I had the car, but it’s in Concord. It’s a beautiful day, but the only place to sit outside so far is the front stoop - and I just discovered yesterday that there are wasps living in the shutter right next to that stoop. I was measuring so that I could go online and see how much it would cost to get new shutters, which we’d have to do if we change the color of the house when we paint. I hooked the tape measure over the top, and out flew three or four wasps, swinging their heads and looking for the cause of the disturbance just like their cartoon counterparts. Or maybe I just imagined that. Fortunately I only had to take one step to get inside and slam the door shut.
Along the same lines of painting the house - I cleaned out a strange little area on the side of the house yesterday, so that we would be able to get in there to reach the adjacent wall. It’s a funny area - we have a shed right next to the house that faces the driveway, and another one (again, right next to the house) that faces the road. There are about two feet between the side of the first one and the back of the second, then about two feet from the back of the first one to the property line, and about five or six feet from the side of the second one to the property line. Like I said, it’s a weird space! We can’t really do anything with it, but it badly needed to be emptied of weeds and weed-trees.
I had to cut my way into it, which I didn’t take as a good sign. But! It turns out that most of the space is tarred! Since we’re not going to try and turn it into a garden, I was so happy to make that discovery. I won’t have to soak the area in vinegar, then cover it with landscaping plastic and mulch, which would be costly and time-consuming. All those weeds were growing in about an inch of composted autumn leaves, and now that it’s all cleaned up, they’ll find it difficult to come back.
……..Okaaayyyy….. I think Jeremy’s cat escaped….. this is not good….

I usually have our taxes done by now, but we’ve been having a hard time getting our free copy of TurboTax this year.
I just found a good little mini-video, though, about the greatest fear of many Americans this time of year: The IRS Audit. The speaker is engaging and exudes trustworthiness for all of his 30 seconds, and it might make some of you feel better, so here it is.
It made me feel better, and I’ve taken tax classes.
