Niece Mackenzie is crawling!!
It’s so unbelievably exciting!!
Jeremy will help me post the video when he gets home from First Monday. But in the meantime, I had to share!!
Update: Jeremy is here, and so is the video!
Happy Birthday to Jeremy, who turns 30 today! And many, many thanks to those who came to his party Saturday, especially those of you traveled multiple hours to be here. It was a roaring success!
Parties at the Biggses’ house will be a little more reasonable in the future… at least until Jeremy turns 40. =) In the meantime, what a blast! Pictures can be found here. Peter Wood also took some pictures, which with his monster camera and practiced eye look pretty amazing. While you’re in the area, check out Peter’s photography services (just so you know, Jeremy observed that he never even noticed Peter taking any shots….)
And finally, here’s a video of Jeremy’s Big Present! You can pretty much stop after the smooch; we wanted to get the video up tonight and didn’t want to take time to figure out the video editing program. The main thing is: he’s happy!

A while back, Jeremy and I were trying to talk ourselves into getting rid of cable, and I asked for some personal experiences about life without.
Jeremy and I talked about the responses, and they became part of our decision to smash the satellites, so to speak. (Although, apparently we own the satellites, so they still adorn the front of our house. Anybody looking at DirecTV? We’ll give them away if you’ll come take them off the house.)
That’s right, we’ve been cable-free for over a month! How’s it going?
Really well.
First of all, we still watch TV, but we do it over the internet and on DVD through Netflix. We have two half-hour programs (21 minutes) and two hour-long programs (43 minutes) that we watch each week, plus Battlestar Galactica on DVD. Hulu seems to be the best for internet TV, at least as far as we’ve found so far. You can create a personal list of shows, and the site will put those shows on one page as new episodes arrive. It’s been working really well for us.IMDB has some current shows, but often it only has clips. And the individual network sites tend to have a longer lag between air date and internet date than the independent sites.
Secondly, we haven’t had any trouble at all filling up our days. I used to spend hours in front of the tube on Saturdays, and already I can’t imagine how I ever found the time! Granted, our house is bigger-better now, so activities like having guests are possible though they weren’t before. (In fact, last night I faced the possibility of throwing a get-together for ten people with 30 minutes’ notice. I declined, but I decided to explore that challenge and see if I can come up with a way to do it to my own satisfaction. I think it might be possible!)
We’ve been reading more. Actually, I’ve been so busy that I’ve been reading less, but Jeremy has been reading more - which is a huge indicator of how the pace of our lives has changed, because that is not the first leisure activity he reaches for. We’ve been playing Wii Fit and Wii Brain Age more. And last Sunday, for the first time, we actually ran out of things to do… and ended up like this: Jeremy lounging on the couch with a book, the propane stove on, a cat cleaning herself on the braided rug in front of the fire, and me practicing my harp. When my brain was tired I put the harp away, and Jeremy said, “We’re going to do that again tomorrow, right?” We didn’t, but we did it again later in the week. It is a great way to spend an evening!
I think the main challenge in getting rid of cable has been redefining “down-time”. While we had tons of TV readily available, down-time was only sitting in front of the TV for two hours before bed. That was it. Anything else was work. We still do that sometimes; Battlestar Galactica is riveting. But now down-time is also an evening like last Friday. Or an evening playing board games with Jeremy’s parents. Or having friends - or complete strangers, as the case may be! - over for lunch and a game. And I’m sure we’ll come up with more as our lives without cable progress.
So far, we’re very, very happy with our decision. Of course, the real test will happen when life slows down in January….

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! We hope you’re enjoying this time with people you love!
Two words:
1. Comments aren’t working, so if you really need to say something, please shoot us an email. We’re working to get them up-and-running again.
2. Watch out for those Black Friday sales this year - there aren’t many great deals, so make sure to do your research! If you knew you were only saving five dollars, would you still get up at 4AM?

This is just a friendly reminder - if you received an invitation to Jeremy’s birthday party and haven’t RSVPd, please do it now! The deadline is tomorrow!
I’m still waiting on 17 responses. Please don’t make me Google for all of those phone numbers…. By the time I’m done doing that, you’ll want to not be one of the people I’m calling!
We’ve been so wrapped up in completing and living in our beautiful house that I believe I’ve neglected to mention the very first person who made it possible. BNB Builders were wonderful (Brian and Benny Laliberte, Claremont, NH), but from whom did we get their name?
That’s Dave Numme, folks, computer whiz. Jeremy used to work with him at Staples. Maybe I did mention this last winter - Dave read a blog we wrote about looking for a builder and shot off an email to Jeremy about BNB Builders. And without that email, none of this would have been possible.
Thank you so much Dave, for taking the time to put in a word. I’ve been wanting to invite you and your family over for dinner, but I hesitate because I know you’re so busy… I just want you to know that we haven’t forgotten, and we’ve been thinking of you with grateful hearts!

Jeremy’s birthday present to me was my brother! Josh drove up from Central NY Friday night, arriving here a little before 9, and stayed until Sunday morning.
Both men agreed my reaction was worth the trip. I know because they were discussing it while I was testing my blood sugar to determine if I was shaking from excitement or a low.
We went apple picking on Saturday, then to the Co-op, and afterward Josh and I used our food finds to make dinner together: Cumin-encrusted Pork Chops with Sweet Potato Autumn Hash and Spicy Apple Puree. You wish you were there.
Josh also set some new records on Wii Fit Saturday afternoon, so we’ll be working to knock him off the top of the rankings.
We have a few pictures, which will probably be posted somewhere just this side of never. But in the meantime, thanks for coming Josh!! It was great to see you!!

New construction photos.
Can you tell me what the license plate KE2NE2T says? We racked our brains all the way home from Pizza Hut tonight, can’t figure it out.
Mackenzie pictures. Jeremy said he’d upload our pictures of the baptism tonight - so far these are a combination of Mom’s and Meghan’s. Have you ever SEEN a more beautiful baby? And she’s so well-behaved too, I almost (not quite) wish she was mine!
Update: Our pictures have now been added to Mackenzie’s Baptism!

to grandmother’s house we went! That’s right, this weekend we traveled to New York to meet Mackenzie Marie and witness her baptism. She’s seven weeks old; in addition to holding up her head and rolling over (although not intentionally yet), she’s also smiling! And oh my goodness, what an amazing smile!
Father Kopp performed a beautiful private ceremony for Mackenzie, during which he explained all the symbolism of the various applications of oil and water - educational for me, since I was too young to remember the four baptisms I’ve attended. We have all kinds of pictures, Jeremy will upload them later. We’ll try to do it today so that we can remember enough to label them correctly.
The drive home was a little scary… we ended up smack dab on top (well, right underneath) a gigantic electrical storm that followed us from the end of the Interstate in Troy, NY, through the mountains and into Springfield, VT. We saw some great lightening, but it was a tad close for comfort! That plus fog made it a tense ride. We didn’t get home until 11PM, but Jeremy didn’t have any trouble staying awake.
It’s so good to be home.
Construction is once again underway, after an excruciating hiatus while our contractors were on vacation! The lastest pictures are available here, or click on the photo gallery and check out the Homework - Addition album.
In other news, we are thoroughly ashamed of ourselves for having forgotten to blog about our visit with Aunt Barb and Uncle Bob! We had a fantastic visit with them, and it should by no means go unsung!
They arrived around 1:30pm Monday June 23rd, cutting short our frantic last minute cleanup routine :-) We were happy they did though. We gave them the grand tour, (which will be much more grand the next time we see them) of the house, and immediately fell into chatting about their adventures in Singapore and the incredible work God is doing with them. We took a walk around Claremont and had dinner, all with lots more exciting conversation…then we introduced them to the Wii. Ha! We had a ball the rest of the night playing Wii Sports and Wii Fit. When you watch your aunt and uncle throwing punches together on the Wii and end up knocking each other out simultaneously…that’s just good stuff.
We actually worked half days Monday and Tuesday, so Tuesday morning we were working, to give them a chance to slow down and have some alone time for a bit. When we got back, we headed out for a hike up to the summit of Mt. Ascutney, where it rained absolute oceans on us until we thought we were out of luck. It finally broke long enough for us to make it up and back though; it felt good to do some outdoorsy stuff with them, get the tough juices flowing. Back home, we had a delicious montage of cheeses, bread, veggies, crackers, wine and fantastic company, then fell into great game of Settlers of Catan, which I happily won, by the way. A couple episodes of Firely (to get them hooked!) later, and our visit was over. They headed for Storyland the next morning.
We had such a great time with you guys! We’ll be ready and waiting with a new house when you visit again!
P.S. A few more pictures can be found here.
P.P.S Jeremy didn’t mention a couple of the surprises we found when we got home today. We drove up to find that our driveway is gone. We did not expect this, in fact, the contract says that the driveway was supposed to be “cut off” at the garage and otherwise left as-is. Surprise! Anybody know proper blue-stone driveway snow care? Also, we found hay all over the lawn, which apparently means that they seeded it with grass. Surprise again! Only in this case it’s a good thing - now we don’t have to go out and price sod. ![]()
