      The Blizzard of '05

I was just on prwdot.org, and I like how Peter typed numerous updates into one blog yesterday, so I'm "borrowing" his method. Imitation is the highest form of flattery, right?

6:20 AM
Dan spent the day yesterday telling the customers that we would only close if we got 31 inches of snow. Not 28, not 30.5 -- 31. After a few attempted calls to the Red Cottage this morning and an exciting and brief discussion with my co-worker Jackie, Dan finally called me back and greeted me with "31 inches", which was code for "the Red Cottage is not opening today". I'm a little disappointed, because the heroism of shovelling out of two feet of snow (about how much we have right now) and travelling ten miles on unplowed roads just to make sure our customers get their breakfast, really appealed to me. What a great story that would have made. Ah well, it's not to be. ::sigh:: I would like to take a moment to memorialize my loss. ::moment of silence::
Okay, now it's time to make waffles!

8:30 AM
The Regional VP of Staples wanted to shoot for a noon opening time today. This, despite the fact that there is about 30 inches of snow on the ground and we are in an official state of emergency. In case he ever comes across this blog, I will not say anything about my opinion of his ethical intelligence -- paper and pens on one hand, human life on the other. Hmm. He did come to his senses about half an hour later though, and now Jeremy has a snow day too! Hurrah!
Jeremy-ism: (We're snuggled under the down comforter and Patchies is perched on top, purring and turning this way and that to absorb the maximum love from the petting she's getting.) "I wonder if Anabel thinks Patchies is a brown-noser. ::pause:: Her nose is brown."

2:50 PM
We lost power for about an hour and a half around nine-thirty AM, but we didn't know it, because we were outside participating in a shovelling-bee with our neighbors. Then we fell asleep (we were up at 3:30 AM, after all!) While we were asleep, the power came back on -- thank heavens! -- and it kept snowing. So, after the hour and a half's hard labour this morning, and the hour early this morning, we now have another foot and a half of drifted snow in front of our door. We're not going back out until the snow stops, if only because all of our snow equipment is wet now!

6:30 PM
We've talked to our brother Justin, and he's snowed in as well, happily playing video games. Peter and Becky are okay too -- although, they live in the basement level of their apartment, so they are literally snowed in. No light! (Becky says: Surprisingly enough, we actually had quite a bit of light in the ole apartment... The snow acted as a reflective surface and made a nice glowing effect inside. Very pleasant :) )
Everybody's okay, the snow should be stopping soon, and then we'll dig ourselves out.
Again.
